How to pass through Ethernet port to Win7x64 guest from Mint

Hi all,

I have googled my life away and just cant find an answer to this... hopefully someone here can help out. I will try and be as specific as possible.

Host: Samsung i3 laptop. 6Gb RAM. Wireless internet connection. Ethernet port (to be used by guest). Linux Mint 17.1

Guest: Windows 7 x64.

OK. I installed the guest - updated it with the latest MS patches. Installed Guest Additions (setup properly using windows safe mode install).

It all works perfectly - including 3D acceleration. USB sticks are able to be passed through to the guest - that also works.

The guest uses a NAT connection for "internet" access from the hosts wireless home connection. The Ethernet port on the side of the laptop is unused.

The Problem:

I created the guest for a friend who does alot of events for her running club. The club has all kinds of tags to give to runners and athletes as they compete in various stages of events.
There are multiple bits of hardware involved here.

There are 2 USB devices that plug into the laptop. Those work well after being setup in Virtual Box and passed through.

There is a 3rd device that Iv never seen tho -I was unaware that it was needed when I set the VM up. It plugs into the Ethernet port and "does something" ... I do not know what. It wasnt explained to me when I built the VM and I wont be at the persons house (other end of the country!!) for several weeks.

When she plugs it into the Ethernet port absolutely nothing happens. The guest doesnt see it.

Im assuming we can overcome this by setting it up as "Adaptor 2" and leaving the NAT wireless adaptor alone? Is this correct?

If so can anyone link me an article on how to do this?

If it's not possible - would we be able to use the VM in an "offline mode" whereby it temporarily cannot see the internet - but can use the Ethernet port? That would be fine during an event - and we could then revert settings afterwards to a regular NAT network to upload the data.

I have just been unable to find any article worth the paper it's virtually written to. None are in depth enough for our needs.

Reason:

The running club spent a great deal of money on this equipment - and shock... horror... it doesnt play with Windows 8 onwards. A Windows 7 environment is the only one it works with. No use going back to the manufacturer - they went bankrupt years ago.
A VM is perfect as when Windows 7 eventually goes out of support we can still use it by saving the VM image in a safe place in case it gets infected... and keeping the whole thing behind Linux is added security.

Is anyone able to help? It would be a major issue for the club if they lost so much investment.

Thanks in advance.

Adam

What is the device?

I'm thinking a 2nd network card in your guest, bridged to the wired Ethernet port on the laptop, may work. You might have to set a static IP address on your guest's second network card for the communication to work.

A USB to Ethernet adapter may work. Then pass it to the guest, maybe. Just guessing.

Bought a USB adaptor and have had Amazon deliver it to her: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00M ... ge_o00_s00

Just a cheap one but at least it's supports operating system types (would be a bit bizarre if it didnt...)

Lets see how she gets along with it.
