I have installed Virtual Box on a Mac running OS X 10.8.5. so that I can use Windows XP.

I have also installed the Extension Pack for all supported platforms.

Windows recognizes a USB stick but I cannot get VB to pick up a USB with a Lacie Hard Drive, which is a few years old.

Method I am using is:
Plug in the USB for Lacie and wait for OSX to display it. Then I eject it. I go into VB and I have a filter in the USB port setting for the Lacie.

I then start VB and Windows XP but the USB does not appear?

I have tried connecting via the USB icon in the bottom right corner of Windows and get this error message:

A few things, the LaCie drive cannot be USB3.0. You can't have any blank USB filters. You have to have a separate filter for the flash drive and the LaCie drive. The USB filter for the LaCie drive should only have the Vender and Product IDs filled in. You also have to unplug the drive not just eject it. Then plug it back in once the guest is running.

Thank you for your reply. My Lacie is a few years old so I dont think it would be USB 3.0?

I dont understand what you mean by blank USB filters?

I have a separate filter for Flash & Lacie.

By a blank filter I meant a filter with no info in any of its fields.

A blank USB filter can also be defined by its effect: any host device might be matched, grabbed and assigned exclusively to the guest: USB devices can't be shared, so the host loses the use of it.

This would be perfectly acceptable a few years ago, where typically you might have one USB pen drive plugged into the PC at a time. Today however your keyboard, mouse, pen drive, webcam, speakers, microphone, internet connection... etc etc, could all be USB devices.

So, the trick is to fill in just enough of the fields so that a single device is matched, but without making the filter completely inflexible.
