Maybe ctrl was unnecessary but yea it copies it to the clipboard so I can paste into paint to edit, etc.

Not just unnecessary, it forms a different keystroke and may not produce the same result.

I've done it a bunch of times on regular pc w/o problems. Either way I'm still at a loss with this for XP, any more ideas?

You've run out of options. You can either…
Install the Boot Camp drivers in your guest.
Use Snipping Tool as mpack suggested.

Or, you can create a shared folder for your guest and use the VirtualBox screenshot, save it in the shared folder then copy it into your guest.

FYI, this is not a VirtualBox issue. The same thing happens when you plug an Apple Keyboard into a Windows PC. The keymaps and keycodes are different and not all overlap.

Actually, "Snipping Tool" doesn't exist in XP. There may however be third party equivalents around.

That is correct mpack, I was thinking of a free third party tool called "Snipping Tool ++". I had it installed in an XP guest in the past. I think I had to update Java to get it working but it worked.

I'm interested in revisiting this but for the purpose of using f1,f2, f3 keys etc. Can someone provide a link where I can get the boot camp drivers for a windows 7 guest?

How is that related to the original question? One issue per topic please.

Because I still want to install the boot camp drivers I just don't know how. Same solution?

Two things…
1. If you want the Macs function keys to work normally on guests you need to go into System Preferences>Keyboard and set them to act as normal function keys.
2. For the Boot Camp Drivers do a search for "Boot Camp Support Software".

Whether the drivers will fix the PrtScr once they're installed in the guest I can't say.

None of this is VirtualBox issue.
