hide virtualbox taskbar icon?

Post by N1C39UY »

hello, i have setup kali linux to run in seamless mode on windows 7. i've got 2 screen's, one for kali and one for windows 7 as you can see in the screenshot below:

h t t p : //i57.tinypic . com/m7yq0x.png
(sorry i had to do it like this becouse i cannot add images yet since this is my first post, just remove the spaces)

as you can see it works flawless and very nice as i want in seamless mode on both the display's. But...
in my taskbar you can see there are 2 virtual box windows open... i've been searching how i can hide them but i can't find anything.
i want the virtual box taskbar icons/windows of virtual box gone and still have kali linux running in seamless mode.

does anyone have an idea how to do this?

Thanks in advance!

You can attach images directly - you are not prevented from doing that. The only thing a new user is prevented from doing is posting URLs.

I don't click offsite links and so have not tried to de-obfuscate the link you provided. I'll try to answer anyway...

The taskbar icons are put there by Windows, not by VirtualBox. Windows will do this for any running process that creates a top level window, which VirtualBox must in order to display anything.

i am sorry but that's not true, in almost any language you can just disable the taskbar icon and even enable and disable it while the program is running, it is just a setting in your code that can be changed.
but anyway, for me it seems a bit overkill to take the vbox source code, disable the taskbar icon, and then recompile it evertime there is an update... i could try to make a code injector to change the setting but that's only my last resort option.

and btw i tried with the img code but it still did not work becouse it recognises the u rl (i can't even type that without it being blocked) inside the img square brackets.

when you are creating a message there is a tab under the message area, "Upload attachment". That is where you would attach a screen shot and/or compressed log files.

I hope you didn't suffer by having the icons in your taskbar, along with all the others.

it says it's an invalid image...
btw i just want to remove it so i dont make it even more messy...
and i am working on a solution in vb with Function Shell_NotifyIcon Lib "shell32dll"
but it would be way better to do it another way...

if it's over 128k it won't upload but jpegs and pngs work. not sure bout gifs or tiffs or whatever else there is out there. :)

Actually I do understand wanting to clean something up for cosmetic reasons. I was being somewhat contrary. Sorry about that.

You could be right, but I'm sure VirtualBox doesn't offer any such feature and what I've described is the default Windows behaviour.

And btw: "notify icons" presumably refers to icons in the taskbar notification area - and those certainly can be turned on and off. I assumed however that you were referring to the main task button.

finally solved it, just some good old coding :p
i will add the icon hider and source code for anyone who would like to use it in the future. if someone would like me to update it or actually make it intro something way more useful (think about vbheadlesstray) i could for shure do that if you want me to. i've got enough time anyways so please tell me.
anyways, link to the program+sourcecode(zip) is under here ;) the program is in the root of the zip folder and there will be a file called source but if you need that i'm shure you will find out xp

feel free to ask me to continue this!

EDIT:
if you open the program you see 2 empty textboxes, just ignore them unless you use more then 1 virtual desktop or VM (so if you have more then 1 virtualbox window not counting the virtual box manager)
