Won't boot any VM's after trying to run minimized

I have a strange and annoying issue. If I start a VM normally it works, but when I try to run a Debian VM minimized/headless (by holding shift and clicking "Start") my WM's won't complete their boot up sequence. After this happens I can no longer boot any VM (minimized or the normal way with a window). I doesn't help to shut and restart VirtualBox, I have to reboot Windows. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit with VirtualBox v.4.3.12. Any idea what the underlying issue is?
