Copying virtual machine from old hard drive

Post by Pigeons »

I am aware that there are ways to export and clone virtual machines, but I am trying to copy a virtual machine from a hard drive which I recovered from my malfunctioning laptop. I have tried copying over the folder from program files and from the users area but the old virtual machines are not being picked up. Any ideas? Thank you. :D

Basically you need to copy which guests folders from the old "Virtualbox VMs" folder into the new "VirtualBox VMs" folder. Then you just add each one by using the " Add Machine" item from the VB menu and select the .vbox file for the guest.

Worked great thanks.
I had the error "Cannot register the DVD image '/usr/share/virtualbox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' {0fe1ba24-f623-405c-a7a9-8c157c9b0520} because a CD/DVD image '/usr/share/virtualbox/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso' with UUID {f6d59efd-7c5f-4679-bb0d-88b36ee6be50} already exists." but I removed VBoxGuestAdditions.iso from Virtual Media Manager and now it works.

You're welcome. And yes, if you don't remove the guest additions .iso you will run into that. Always a good idea to remove the .iso once the GAs are installed.
