I'm trying to share a Windows folder for a Linux client. I think there is some old conflicting shared names, but I'm not sure how to remove them (I already removed the shares in the VirtualBox settings).

The error message is:
Failed to create the shared folder [share name] (pointing to [path]) for the virutal machine [VM name].

Could not create a shared folder '[share name]' mapped to '[path]' (VERR_ALREADY_EXISTS).

I just ran into the same problem and found your post when searching for a solution. I have a Mac Host and CentOS 7 Linux guest. Did you ever get this resolved?

I can umount and rmdir the old shared sf_* folders in the /media directory. However, as soon as I reboot they all reappear.

I did a bit more searching and found that the following command (issued by the host with the Linux VM closed) helped.

I deleted the old shared folders and recreated them. That got things working again.
