Software compatibility

Post by Rubens »

Hello everybody,

Recently I started working on an iMac computer with virtualbox. It has a Windows 8.1 VM to run my favourite windows programs.

Unfortunately one of these windows programs is behaving very unexpected. Therefore I installed a Windows 7 virtual machine, just to see how it will run the faulty program. But unfortunately I get exactly the same unexpected behavior.

I will try to explain some of the "bad" behavior of the program. First of all, it is a calculation program to train kids with special needs. When I start a "game" the computer comes with a small calculation exercise which should be displayed as " 4 + 5 = ? ". But unfortunately on the virtual machines it shows " 4 1 5 = ?". As you see it replaces the plus-sign with the number 1. On a physical windows machine (for instance my old windows 7 computer) the program runs fine.

Also I tried to run it in windows compatibility mode. But as I was searching on the forums, I noticed that this feature is not supported by virtualbox for some reason.

I don't expect to get an exact or step by step solution from you guys. It would just be amazing to get some directions/hints to solve such issues!! Also I will gladly report back if I get some usefull results :)

Looks like a display glitch, possible 2D/3D related.
Let's first check out your VM for something obviousPlease attach a VM log file for a full VM session (from start to stop) - see Minimum information needed for assistance.

Also, if you could mention the name of the program if it's free or if there is a free trial. I would be willing to test it in my guests.

@ noteirak
Thanks for the hint, I sure will try your options tonight and provide some required information. (thanks for the link!)

Unfortunately the software came available last year from the workshops my wife did. Also the licensing is very thoroughly. I wished they spend more time on fixing bugs and service instead  I even cannot run it on my "native windows laptop" without unrolling the licence on the "VM windows" Anyway I will try to get some screen shots to give the problem a better indication. Also.... now I think of it... I can try to run the VM on the windows laptop, instead of the Mac computer :D

While talking about ins and outs with a college, I told him about the topic I started here. He told me that he also experienced problems on his machine, which is a "bare-metal" windows 7 machine with the same computer program. His problems they are not the same as mine. But I think it is worth comparing before wasting anybodies time over here.

Anyway I would like to thank you for all your tips/hints and help. I really appreciate it!

If I might find a solution/problem which is VM based, I will share it.
