Win8 Host w Win7 Guest Res Issues

Hi All,
Sorry to bother all with this one, have seen this discussed many times but none of the suggested solutions have worked for me (haven't come across a setup on a surface yet but im sure theres one out there
)
Using a Surface Pro2 (256gig, 8gig, i5) running windows 8.1, in VirtualBox (4.3.28, with extension pack 4.3.28) im running a Windows 7 64bit 2gig VM,
if I run this on the surface' display there are no issues I can run the VM at 1920x1080 , if I move this VM to a secondary display 24" wide screen, my only resolutions around the target range are... 2880x1620 , 1920x1440 , 1600x1200 etc no 1920x1080 option.
Have tried with and without guest additions installed
various combos of 3D and 2D acceleration enabled / disabled
enabling auto size screen, scalable, full screen to no avail
was able to set the resolution manually via command prompt in the Host OS however it appears my monitor was still at 2k+ resolution as the 1920x1080 guest had a 2" black border all the way around it.
*I can somewhat resolve the issue by increase the DPI in the guest VM but not everything displays correctly like this.
**from what I have read / can gather this is an issue with HiDPI on the surface and retina displays (apple)
if anyone can assist, refer me on or anything that will be greatly appreciated
