[Solved] Windows 7 SP1 X64 DSP OEI

Post by R* »

Windows 7 new DVD is pretty hard to find nowadays.

Could get on Amazon a DVD "Windows 7 SP1 X64 DSP OEI".

But the label says
"The software is intended for preinstallation on the hard drive of the fully assembled computer system, using the OEM pre-installation tools"
Does it install well in a VirtualBox (Host Linux/ubuntu)?

As a guess I would say probably not but there is no exact match on Amazon for "Windows 7 SP1 X64 DSP OEI". Do you have the exact title?

Important Information About This Product
OEM software is intended for system builders and small OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) who manufacture computer systems and pre-install OEM system builder software onto those systems. It is not intended for purchase or installation by consumers.

I have no problem buying such a license: for the purpose of licensing you are a system builder, the PC you build just happens to be virtual. Microsoft has established that they regard virtual PCs as just like hardware for licensing purposes, so they can't have it both ways. Just understand that OEMs don't expect support from MS.

my concern was actually this bit
and pre-install OEM system builder software
So this would install in VirtualBox?

Thank you mpack for moderating the forum and providing relevant info.
I almost returned the -not opened yet- DVD!
Now, I'm going to install it in peace.

As long as it isn't intended for specific hardware - which is why one should avoid e.g. Dell and HP branded OEM disks - then it's a generic OEM install, it should come with a complete driver set, and should be just as capable of running in a VM as a generic retail copy. In fact it's much better than some retail installs since it won't have any crap bundled with it. It should just be the standard OS.

And pre-installing it on a PC is precisely what I do with it: I build a template VM, install the OS in it, and then clone that template each time I need a new test machine. Of course these are used one at a time, and not distributed to third parties.
