I have VirtualBox 4.3.24 running on Windows 7 on two different machines, a Toshiba laptop and an HP laptop. On the Toshiba, I can successfully attach a Prolific Technology USB-to-Serial converter to a Linux guest machine running Fedora 17 (kernel version 3.3.4). On the HP, the USB-to-serial converter will not attach to a virtually identical Fedora 17 guest.
Here's the error I get:
