After 9 hours of installing/uninstalling, and reinstalling old versions I am at the point of giving up. All goes well until I try to instal the operating system, then I get the following as in the picture.
Has anyone got a fix for this please.

Have tried both CD and ISO to install, but always get the same error.
I have installed windows virtual pc and that's worked ok, so I know the ISO file is ok.
Here is the log file:

The log ends as soon as the VM tries to boot from the CD, so the obvious suspicion is that there might be something wrong with the CD image.
Where did this Win98 ISO come from?

For some reason it started working, no idea why.

Well, if the bad memory reference is random, perhaps it just lucked onto a valid address. That's fine, since you only need it to get through the install process then you can unmount the CD.
In fact it's common practice with Win98 installations to copy the CD contents to a hdd folder, and run it from there. Win98 frequently requests the setup CD to be reinserted, so installing from an hdd folder means you'll never be bothered by that prompt.
