I'm getting a little further. I restarted and the adapter was enabled. I was able to install Ubuntu but I can't set the networking to bridged like before.

Can anyone tell me what may be wrong?

Click on the name where it says nothing selected and select your hosts network adapter.

Yeah there's nothing listed there.

I turned on the MSI log and tried to install 4.3.30 (which is hung at 100% of the status after about 20 minutes).

The MSI log didn't mention 0x8004a029 as far as I can tell.
The INF cache is corrupt. In this case, the install log (%windir%\inf\setupapi.log on XP or %windir%\inf\setupapi.dev.log on Vista or later) would typically mention the failure to find a suitable driver package for either the sun_VBoxNetFlt or sun_VBoxNetFltmp components. The solution then is to uninstall VirtualBox, remove the INF cache (%windir%\inf\INFCACHE.1), reboot and try to re-install VirtualBox
The host is Windows 8.1 and the suggested INF files it mentions do not exist. I've already tried uninstalling, rebooting, and installing 4.3.28 to no avail. The 4.3.30 install is still stuck.

Does anyone have any other ideas?
