USB mouse not working after shutting down guest OS.

Post by plamen_todoroff »

I'm running Virtualbox 1.6 (NON-OSE) on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy. My mouse is Logitech MX1000 usb mouse.

I install Hardy again but this time as a guest (hardy guest on hardy host). The mouse wasn't detected right away, and i enabled usb support in the host following one of the tutorials. Then I could use the mouse inside the virtual machine only if i enabled it from the list of usb devices.

The problem is that when i shut down the virtual machine and the virtual machine window closes, the mouse stays frozen on the screen of the host and i can't use it. I have to resart the host to get my mouse working.

On Gutsy I was running Virtualbox 1.5.6 OSE, and the very same mouse was working without the need to enable usb support, actually all i did was to add myself to the vboxusers group and everything was fine. The mouse got captured in the VM and uncaptured when i shutted down the VM.

I know that the difference between ose and non-ose (which i'm currently using) is that non-ose supports usb. But previously i was using the ose edition and my usb mouse worked out of the box. How come?

I know that Virtualbox 1.6 NON-OSE unmounts usb from the host in order to use them in the guest, so i figure that my mouse just stays unmounted after i shut down the VM. But how do i mount a mouse?

I think you need to install guest additions (Devices > Install Guest Additions). VBox guest additions is like vmware tools. Read chapter 4 in the user manual and specifically chapter 4.3.1.
