I am running VMBox under Windows xp as guest on a host PC running Windows 8.1 . The version of virtualbox is 4.3.28 r100309. When I insert an F&P SmartStick I get an error message. The attachment is the error message. Also I removed the usb stick and insertrted it in another usb port and now under usb devices it shows 2 of them. How do I remove both of them?

I forgot to mention that when I insert the stick into the host's usb port that it is recognized immediately and a window pops up on the host showing the files on the stick.

Create a filter for the device in the VM settings. IME this is much more reliable on Windows hosts.
- With the VM shut down, plug the device in and create a USB filter using the VM settings. Make sure the filter has the minimal number of fields (e.g. manufacturer and device id) needed to uniquely identify your device, and distinguish it from (say) your mouse and keyboard.
- Unplug the device again and boot up your guest OS.
- When the guest has completely finished booting up, plug in your device. A "New hardware recognized" dialog should pop up. This is not the guest seeing the device, this is VirtualBox on the host wanting to install a redirection driver for the device. Tell it not to search the internet, but do install the driver automatically.
- Unplug the device again, then plug it in again. Now the guest OS should see it. At this point if device level guest OS drivers are needed then you should install them.
You don't say what the device is. If it's a mass storage device then a sometimes better alternative is to access it as a shared folder. That way you can share it with the host and with others VMs.

It's a usb stick. How do I set up a USB Filter if VMBox is not running? Your item 1.

Can you have more than one shared folder?

VM = Virtual Machine = Guest. You shutdown the VM.
No such thing as VMBox.
Yes, you can have more than one shared folder.

VM settings | USB. With the device plugged in so you can grab ID fields from it.

Problem still not resolved. When I click on Devices-USB there are 3 unknown items .
Unknown device 0460:0809[0009]
Unknown device 0573:4D00[0100]
Unknown device 0764:0501[0001]
How do I remove them?

According to
http://www.linux-usb.org/usb.ids your devices are:
- 0460:0809 : Ace Cad Enterprise Co., some sort of tablet.
- 0573:4D00 : Zoran Co. Personal Media Division (Nogatech), Hauppauge WinTV-USB USA.
- 0764:0501 : Cyber Power System, CP1500 AVR UPS
.
You can remove them (if you wish) by unplugging them from your host. Easy, right?

Thank you for your quick response and including the URL where I can find USB IDs. The only one I don't recognize is the tablet as I don't have one. I'll email the company to ask them.
