Issues with VirtualBox on Windows

Post by amardeep.sidhu »

Hello Members,

I am running Windows 8 on my Desktop (i5 processor and 4 Gigs of RAM) and have installed the latest version of VirtualBox. I created one VM (with 2 Gigs of RAM) and installed Oracle Linux 5.10 there. After the installation it booted successfully and i ran yum to update some rpms. At that moment disk was doing IO like crazy. I suspected that may be the .vdi file was not created with fixed size so it was getting extended but when i checked that wasn't the case. I also have Ubuntu installed on my Desktop as a dual boot option. I booted into Ubuntu, created a new VM and imported the same .vdi from Windows VM. Here it was doing ok.

Then i cloned this VM running Linux 5.10 in Windows and rebooted the new VM. It was stuck at boot..sometimes at cups service and another time at some other. I did the same thing again i.e. imported the same .vdi in VirtualBox running on Ubuntu. Again here it booted really quick without any issues.

Any ideas what could be the issue here ? Any hints on which direction to troubleshoot in ? Looks like i have all these issues while running VirtualBox on Windows. When i run it on Ubuntu it seems to work just fine.

Thank you !

Are you sure you have 2GB free RAM on Windows when trying to run the VM?

Yup. Also this system had 8 Gigs of RAM till recently. That time also i faced the same issues. Few weeks ago i had to remove 4 Gigs as there were some issues with memory sticks and they needed replacement. So running on 4 Gigs only.

Thank you !

Provide a VM log please. Right click the VM in the GUI. Select "Show Log". Save "VBox.log" to a file. Compress that file and attach it to a message here. Make sure the VM is fully shut down before taking a log.

Thanks Martin. Reduced the guest memory to 1.5 GB and booted again. It still seems to be stuck.

Thanks,

Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.10. I am going to install Oracle database on this but at this moment it is only the OS. Nothing on top of that.

From Oracle 5.10
Red Hat compatible Kernel [kernel-2.6.18-371.el5]. Installed by default
From VBox guest site
Linux family
Generally, all 2.4 and 2.6+ kernels work; however, we recommend 2.6.13 or above for better performance. Kernels 2.6.18 to 2.6.18.2 contain a race condition (which was unfortunately backported to the Ubuntu 6.06 Server and 6.10 kernels) that can cause boot crashes in virtual machines.
I had to go back in time to remember this version. Why not a newer one?

Well, in the enterprise world OEL 5 is not really that old a version. Was trying something that runs on OEL 5.10. Hence the case.
