Interrupted installation of VirtualBox

Post by cdclose »

I was preforming an upgrade to a new version of VirtualBox on windows 7 when I lost power before it completed. Now my system has absolutely no video. I've tried all the video cards including the onboard video card. I've tried reseting the CMOS. I can't get a display to show anything when the PC is turned on. Has anyone run into this or have any clue how to resolve it?

Do you get the BIOS screen text & stuff? Or no video at all, like if the monitor is unplugged?

I don't get the BIOS text or anything. The monitor tells me no signal.

Is there a way to test the power supply to determine if it has failed?

Do you see any LEDs or fans running inside the PC?
FWIW, I'd say this kind of disastrous failure during a Virtualbox installation is just a coincidence. You may have to take your PC to a computer repair shop and have them check it out.

Yes there are LEDs on and I can hear the fan. I was thinking that maybe somehow the install screwed up the video settings but it sounds like this might be coincidental. I'll look more into the power supply.

Absolutely, in fact since the disaster immediately followed a power failure I do wonder why suspicion fell on VirtualBox rather than the power failure. I would suspect a power spike zapping the electronics (I advise investing in a good quality surge suppressor to protect all modern electronics).

I suppose it's another symptom of the feeling that because VirtualBox simulates hardware, that means it must have all kinds of magic voodoo powers over real hardware. Unfortunately not true.
