How do VB's IPs work?

Post by Daddy »

I'm using an Operating System that uses an IP to let others connect to a program. I don't know this IP. On the Operating System, I used a DCHP option to automatically configure the IP. The IP it gave me does not work.

I used the 'curl' command and pinged a website. The command gave me the same IP my host uses, but when I try to connect to the program using the IP and port it doesn't work. In the settings menu I'm using a bridged network.

How do I get my (public) IP?

I'm using VB version 4.3.28 on Windows 8.1.

Sorry I wasn't clear. This OS doesn't have access to the web. It's not a desktop OS.

Is it an OS VirtualBox official supports or just an OS that happens to run on VirtualBox?

It's not an official OS, but I'm 100% sure it works with VB. Also, I used an Ubuntu desktop image and did the IP thing with Google. It's the same IP as my host. Is this normal?

Since a guest uses the host's connection it's normal. However, I know very little about setting up networks so i can't answer the question why you can't connect. Lots of others here do. I'm sure at some point one of them will be online. If not today, tomorrow. This forum is for VirtualBox and the official guests it supports but someone may answer anyway.

IP in a vm works exactly the same way as it does in a physical machine. If you are using bridged mode, the vm should get an IP from DHCP, just as the host does, if you are on a network with a DHCP server.

Where does the host get its IP from? How does it connect to the Internet?
