(Steam version)
I am using Lubuntu LTS as linux host.2D_InitPerDX: Can't create D3DX context. Error: DDERR_INVALIDCAPS.

I installed additional Dx (from VBox) in protected mode, didn't help.

On starting the game, I get the message "X: XD3D_InitPerDX: Can't create D3DX context. Error: DDERR_INVALIDCAPS." (Game doesn't start)

I ran dxdiag, the Dx 8 & 9 tests worked, Dx7 didn't on the DirectDraw 3D Acceleration:
"Aborting the test in 40 (Mirroring primary UI with background buffer will be created): HRESULT = 0x88760064 (error code)"
(Roughly translated)

I also get the a warning about outdated files when I look at the Dx files (in Dxdiag):
D3D8.dll & D3D9.dll

FWIW, Not all games will run in a virtual environment. Virtual machines aren't well suited for gaming.

Did you try PlayOnLinux? If nothing else it takes the tedium out of trying to set up Wine.

There doesn't seem to be a POL config for G2 on Steam (or G2 in general that isn't from GOG).

Actually, G2 works with wine for me, but the sound lags behind and sounding (heh!) unpleasant at times. But unfortunally I couldn't launch mods with it working yet (which is why i wanted to play F2 in the first place

Would it help to install dx7/8/9 manuall on the windows VM?

I doubt it but I'm not sure. I don't play games in VirtualBox. Perhaps someone else knows.
