USB Devices Not Working

I have been trying to get a USB Wireless Adapter to work within virtualbox for some time now. I have followed several suggestions from this forum as well as many from outside as well--all with no success. My host system is Windows 8.1 and have tried using Windows 7, Kali, and Ubuntu guests. Per most recommendations, I added an empty filter and manually entered the Vendor ID and Product ID. Next, I eject the device, startup the VM. Once logged in, I plug the device in.

I never see the light from the VB USB icon (red or green), hovering over it states that no devices are connected. I do hear my local machines tone for a connection, then an immediate disconnect tone--but not sure if that disconnect tone is just VB taking over the device. When I run VBoxManage list usbhost from my host command prompt, I see the device and the current state is 'Captured' (it is 'Busy' prior to starting VM).

I was running version 4.3.16 with guest additions expansion pack installed. My laptop only has 3.0 USB ports, so to rule out this being an issue, I installed the Beta 5.0 version of VB, with expansion pack and guest additions.

I would assume that the issue lies within Virtualbox because I cannot get any USB devices to work on any guest. Does anyone have any suggestions? Not sure what additional information would be useful, but can get whatever you need.

Thank you for the help...

found a solution that was posted by nayesis in 2011...

I've got solution finally... T-T

(It seems like problem of window 7)

1. My Host is window 7 32bit home premium. But, 64bit's solution may be same because problem was caused by USB filtering function of WINDOW 7.

2. first of all, edit your registry

- Open the Windows registry, by clicking on Start > Run and typing regedit
- Navigate to the following location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}
- In the right hand panel, if the the UpperFilters entry exists, then delete it

3. Install virtualbox USB driver manually.

- Goto folder C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\drivers\USB\filter
- Click right mouse button on file named VboxUSBMon.inf
- Check Install(I) (maybe.. My window is korean so it dose not exact. )

4. Rebooting

5. Unplug your USB memory (or joystick..)

6. Open VirtualBox and Close it rightly.
( it will remove your USB device from VM's seized list. )

7. Plug your USB memory.

8. Open VirtualBox and Run Virtual Machine.

9. Click right mouse button on USB icon placed in status bar which is below VM window.

10. Check USB device what you want to plug in.

11. Enjoy !!

** notice !!

Do not chain your USB device like snake. for example... A usb bridge <- B usb device... and check B usb device in VM. like this...

to use B usb device, you must check A usb bridge first !... it's so complicate..

That "solution" looks like BS to me - at least as far as relevance to your problem goes.

You might like to look into the tutorials area of the forum instead, e.g. here:

This is not exact (it's mobile broadband, not wireless) but the issues are most likely similar.

If you need to continue this discussion then post the VBox.log file as a ZIPPED attachment.
