Can not install AMD drivers

Hey,

Host computer is Windows 7, Virtualbox is also full installation of Windows 7. The Virtual Win 7 is running good except that there are no GPU drivers installed on it. I tried downloading drivers from AMD's website, but as the installation starts, I get an error and the installation stops.

I don't really know what the Guest Additions really is but I downloaded VBoxGuestAdditions_2.2.0.iso and installed it on the Virtual Win 7 but I still don't seem to have any GPU drivers and I can't install the drivers from AMD manually.

You don't need AMD drivers in your guest because your guest Windows 7 does not see the AMD video card your host has. (I assume that your host has an AMD GPU, since you didn't actually say your host had that kind of card, just that you were downloading AMD drivers for the guest.)

The guest's hardware is all virtual, except for the CPU. So the video card is a simulated Virtualbox video card, and the special drivers for this "card" come from the Guest Additions. in almost all situations, the Guest Additions to be installed is the version that comes with Virtualbox. So unless you're running Virtualbox version 2.2.0, you should uninstall those rrrrreeeeaaaallllyyyy old Guest Additions, and install the ones with the Virtualbox version you're running now: See the Devices menu on the guest's window, choose to load the Guest Additions at the bottom of the menu. The Guest Additions matching the version of Virtualbox will load itself into the guest's virtual CD drive, which you would open and run if Autorun doesn't start the install for you.

You don't install graphics drivers. VirtualBox uses it's own.

No idea where you found the VBoxGuestAdditions_2.2.0.iso but the current version is VBoxGuestAdditions_4.3.26.iso. There is however no need to download the guest additions separately. They come with the VirtualBox package and can be installed from the "Devices" menu.

The user manual is a wonderful thing.

edit: scott beat me to it. :)

Very curious. Why did you do that instead using the Guest Additions supplied with every VirtualBox release? I'd just like to know where you got the idea that the Guest Additions are something that should be downloaded separately. They can be, but in 99.99% of cases it is unnecessary. Just trying to figure out how to make it clearer to users where to find the Guest Additions.

Perhaps once the guest is installed, there could be a dialog box that pops open asking the user if they want to install the guest additions and pointing them to the Devices menu. Like the one asking if you want to download the latest extension pack.

Thanks for the replies! I won't quote anyone since I am basically replying to everyone who have posted in this thread.

I am running version 4.3.20 of VirtualBox and I have searched for the built in Guest Additions in VirtualBox but I can't find it anywhere!

With the guest open. look in the VirtualBox devices menu. You will see an option to mount the guest additions .iso

Aaaaah, now I see the device menu. The menu bar was gone on my Guest window so I had to press Right CTRL + C to enable it. I got it now!

I have installed the Guest Additions (4.3.20) now and I can see the blue VirtualBox icon in the taskbar, but when I am trying to install a program (BlueStacks) I get the error "BlueStacks currently doesn't recognize your graphics card. It is possible your Graphics Drivers may need to be updated.".

BlueStacks may not run in a virtual machine.

That sounds wonderfully simple on paper. But how do you detect that a (supported) guest is installed?

hey, you guys are the developers! :D How about on first launch of the guest? You have to launch the guest to install the GAs anyway.

a lookup table of supported guests?

I would have easily found the Guest Additions if the menu bar wouldn't have been invisible on the Guest window. I had to press Right CTRL + C for the menu bar to appear.

If you weren't in Full Screen you would have seen them also.
