Problems loading dev driver with XP guest on Visa host.

Hello,
Just loaded VB 4.3.26 on my old Vista PC in order to run XP as a guest.
I need XP to run some old programs, one of which uses a serial to usb cable (Prolific).
The cable allows the XP compatible (but not Vista) program to control a stepper motor drive.
I have loaded XP Pro ok and the Guest additions stuff.
XP sees the usb-to-serial device but the driver is missing.
I have a copy of the driver in My Docs in XP.
When in Dev Mgr I cannot install the driver; the driver file is not visible.
Looking at the original folder that contains the driver (from within XP) does not show the driver either.
I have copied the driver file to a cd but the file is invisible.
How can I load the driver please?
