[Solved]Can no longer create VPN connections in the host OS.

Post by ManofGod »

I am running Windows 8.1 Professional. Ever since 4.3.21, I can no longer create VPN adapter connections in my host OS. When I try, I find that I get a bunch of yellow ! in the network section of the device manager well it is trying to create the connection. Has a solution been found for this yet? Thanks. Also, I already tried the latest test build but that did not help. This problem does not occur on my work computer which has the same Windows 8.1 Pro OS.

Round about 4.3.22, reports were received of network issues in various versions. Maybe you have discovered that the issues developed in a test build earlier than 4.3.22 (test builds are the odd-number builds ie .21) Try a complete uninstall of Virtualbox, see if you can get your VPN running again, then re-install the latest version and matching extension pack. If that doesn't work, uninstall again but reinstall 4.3.12 and its extension pack. Report back what you get.

(So, which one are you, btw? Samuel, Elijah, Elisha, the anonymous one who chewed out Jeroboam...? :) )

I know that I already tried removing and reinstalling but it did not help. However, I do not recall if I tried using 4.3.12 again so I will give that a swing tonight and let you know. (Not hopeful but it is worth a shot.) In the meantime, I have been booting up a Windows 7 Pro virtual machine and using a VPN to work from there. Not as convenient but it works. :)

Redoing my computer from scratch is not really an option because of the at least 120 games I would need to reinstall. :D

Unfortunately, it did not help. :| In fact, now I cannot remove WAN Miniport (SSTP) #2 nor will the driver load.

Well, 3.28 did not fix the problem. *Sigh* :|

Without the actual error messages and the VPN software name & version, nobody will be able to help you more.

The VPN software is the stuff built into Windows 8.1 Pro. As far as error messages go, there are no specific ones. Just that when the connection is created, during the process, the WAN Miniport device drivers all end up with a yellow ! on them and the VPN network connection does not work.

The same thing happens when the connection is removed. :?

This is a heads up for anyone else who has the problem: I solved it! Bye! :D

Just kidding: This is what I did to solve it: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... 887036ee9a

The answer is in the second post. Once I deleted this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\SWD\MSRRAS, it worked. I backed up the key just in case but I rebooted after I deleted it, created a VPN connection and it worked! :D  :o  I am happy and I hope this helps someone else out who has the same problem.

You are welcome. :) Probably the one and only real thing I hate is this: Someone comes on a forum, asks for help to solve a problem, solves the problem themselves and says, "Solved, thanks, bye bye." I find that to be the dumbest thing I see on the internet which is why I made sure to post the solution.

I agree. Although when they never come back at all to say a suggestion resolved their problem is equally annoying to me. :D
