Software saying "Network services are not available!"

I have a Windows XP virtual box installed on a Windows 8 host. I am using bridged networking. The virtual box is correctly getting an IP from the real network, and I can ping the virtual box from another computer on the network, and I can ping computers on the network from the virtual box. A web browser to the outside work works fine from the virtual box. It seems all is well.

However, I use some proprietary software that needs to connect to one of the other computers on the network. When I run this software on the virtual box, I get an error that says "Network services are not available! Make sure you are connected to a network."

Does anyone know what I can try to change in the virtual box setup to fix this? I realize I am not giving you much to work with, but I was hoping there might be some common things that cause similar problems that you guys might know of. If I can answer any questions, please let me know.

Thanks,

David

Update: I installed Wireshark on the Guest VM to try to investigate. When I opened the software to produce the error, it worked correctly (and has been working every since)!? Does this provide a clue as to what was wrong with the networking? Some kind of "driver' that was missing that Wireshark installed?
