Windows XP - Mac OSX host Network driver issues

Hey Guys,

So I have been searching these forums for a while now and I can't quite find a solution to the issue I am using.

The VM I am running is Windows XP which is a copy of a laptop that we had at work that we needed to migrate to VMWare. One of the users who needs access to the VM uses a Mac and since VMWare does not have Mac compatibility I turned to Virtualbox. I copied over the VMWare folder and installed the XP machine in Virtualbox on the Mac, but I have been having issues connecting to the Internet.

Originally the network device that was selected was the Intel PRO/1000 MT Dekstop (82540EM), a couple users had recommended switching that to the PCnet-FAST III. I tried that and while that got an Ethernet Device to display in device manager, I still cannot get it to connect to the internet. In XP there is an issue with the driver, but when I downloaded the driver from Intel for the Pro/1000, I could not get it to load as a virtual CD.

Anyone have any ideas? If I left something out or my description was not clear, let me know. Also, if I missed a similar topic that answers my question, a link would be greatly appreciated.

PCnet-FAST III is the default NIC for XP guests in VirtualBox, I suggest you stick with that.

It's the default because generic XP setup CDs include native drivers for that board. However, OEM XPs are not guaranteed to include the same driver set - that's entirely down to the OEM. E.g. I would expect problems if it came from Dell.

Finally, "issues connecting to the Internet" doesn't tell me a whole lot. Some details might be useful.

I suppose more information would be helpful. When I say "issues connecting to the Internet", it just doesn't. When I look in Device Manager, under network adapters it shows "VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet Adapter". I have installed the guest additions and while that fixed my video and mouse issues, it did not fix the Network Adapter. Someone had suggested just right-clicking the VMware adapter and uninstalling, but that did not solve my issue either.

Is that more clear?

A couple thoughts…
Any time you want to try and migrate a guest from VMWare you should remove the VMWare Tools first.
The other thing is, VMWare Fusion is specifically for Macs although it is a commercial program.

I will try re-installing the image after I remove the tools. Hopefully that will work. Also, I did see Fusion, but I was looking more for software I could use that was free.

I am off work just now, so I will try tomorrow and post results.

Thanks for the help!

You should delete anything in the guest's device manager which refers to VMWare.

Alright,

So I got back into VMWare and removed the VMWare tools and then put the VM back into Virtualbox and that seems to have fixed my issue.

Thanks for the help!
