I am a brand new user of both VirtualBox and virtual machines. I've had lots of recommendations for using VirtualBox as my first VM, so that's where I started. I wanted to try out Windows 10 tech preview, hence the virtual machine.
I'm on a Windows 7 64-bit machine. I installed the latest version 4.3.26, and fired it up. Started fine the first time. That's where the progress ended. Clicked on the New button to create a new virtual machine, named it Windows 10, clicked on the drop down next to "type" and nothing was listed. Hit next.
Error message: "Cannot create the machine folder in the parent folder. This folder already exists and possibly belongs to another machine."
Hit cancel. Went to File, Preferences, General. Chose "reset" for Default Machine Folder. Hit OK.
Error message: "Failed to set global VirtualBox properties."
Closed the software. Started it back up.
Error message: "Failed to create the VirtualBox COM object. The application will now terminate. Callee RC: CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE (0x80080005)"
Why am I getting soooo many errors?? Somebody explain this to me, because this...is...ridiculous. Never thought a popular application like this would have so many problems.

Re: VirtualBox just will not cooperate (new user)
If you named the vm Windows 10 (or any variation containing Win and 10), you should not need to do anything with the Type setting. It should automatically set the type to Microsoft Windows and the version to Windows 10 (64bit). It certainly does on my Windows 7 machine.
I would uninstall VirtualBox and start again from the beginning. You seem to have file permission issues.
