It is undeniable that VirtualBox has been totally broken by the MS update KB3045999 (widely reported on this forum)
This is an important security update but I am unable to run any VMs if I allow it to install. This situation in not acceptable for much longer.
As no fix has appeared since the MS update (and I have seen nothing from the devlopers in these forums) I hacve to ask if is there an alternative to VirtualBox that I can change to?

You can try 4.3.12, the last version before security hardening was inserted. It will run up to windows 10 TP, and all but the most recent Linux.
Just remember that with no security hardening, you have to remove and keep off malware from your host.
The security hardening is still a work in progress, and the screwed-up MS updates aren't Virtualbox's fault. Patience is needed while the developers are working on it.

Please could you try the latest Windows
test build (>= r100091? It contains a fix which should allow you to install the Microsoft hotfixes which is highly recommended as they contain important security fixes. Thank you!

I also have Windows 7 x64 with all updates and 4.3.28 works (USB support not installed). I have just upgraded from 4.3.20. I don't have any AV software, Windows Defender real-time protection is disabled.
