How can I install on Windows 2000? I tried the latest download but of course it won't install.
I then tried to run VMWare on Win 2K and I made a Ubuntu Hardy client OS and I tried to install VirtualBox but it fails. Details of the errors and steps I tried to fix it are here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5054763
Anyhow, are either of these methods possible? Inside of a 'real' Win 2K or inside of a VMWare Linux? I can use any VMWare Client OS, not just Ubuntu--just tell me which one will work.
Fred, Sun very unfortunately removed compatiblitiy of Windows 2000 being the host with version 1.6.
Versions prior to that (e.g. 1.5.x) by the prior company Innotek, based I believe, in Germany, worked very successfully for me with Windows 2000 as a host O.S.
Ubuntu I can't comment on - sorry. I have tried a latest copy of Knoppix live CD which included a version of VirtualBox and that worked superbly for me too.
In theory all of us Windows 2000 host users are wanting Sun to restore the ability to host Virtualbox - because Windows 2000 has a smaller footprint than later Windows versions such as XP and Vista. However your guess is as good as mine as to if that will ever happen.
It would save a lot of time and energy if Sun simply and clearly indicated the fact that they withdrew Windows 2000 hosting ability before one even downloaded the 1.6 version. For some of us on limited bandwidth connections we can do without wasting our time, money and effort.
It would also be nice if Sun also made available the prior versions (that do work), easily findable/readily downloadable. It would be interesting to see if they do so as an indication of whether or not they will leave people in the lurch in the future.
I have the same problem, to use Virtualbox in an W2k environment, for its recommendation compared to Vmware and others in a magazin (c't?) lately.
Someone has a hint from where I can get an older version to run on w2k?
haven't found something at sun's site, but also posted a message in their forum for help.
Yes - good question - why does Sun not do an 'old' versions download page ? Especially when retro grade steps like this occur for users of Windows 2000 ?
Thanks. I tried 1.5 on my Win 2K and it 'ended prematurely because of an error'
I tried twice, but same thing.
1.5.2 installed, but then when I put my email address and I used a @yahoo.com address it says "Failed to register the VirtualBox product. Invalid IP address"
I am missing Virtualbox 1.6 for Windows 2000 hosts too.
At the moment I stick to version 1.5.6-1 of Virtualbox. Unfortunately it lacks support for parallel ports.
