Hi everybody,
I've got this problem when using 3D acceleration in an Kubuntu 15.04 Guest:
If 3D acceleration is enabled, KDEs login screen appears normally, one can login. After logging in, the Desktop appears, everything seems to be normal. BUT:
1.) Right clicking somewhere at the desktop doesn't bring up the context menu
2.) Clicking the "KDE" Menu: the KDE Menu appears, but the Control Bar disappears completely
3.) When starting an application in KDE Menu (which can still be opened with Alt+F1), the application seems to start, but no application window appears
4.) Trying to get out of KDE and switch to a console TTY (STRG+ALT+F1) just switches to a smaller screen but in this KDEs background image remains.
==> So the Desktop is completely unusable, it isn't even possible to get a terminal window, so one even can't examine "glxinfo" or some logs...
It looks like the KDE Background lays in front of everything, similar to an "z-axis 9999"...
After disabling 3D acceleration the Desktops behaves absolutly normal but not with the performance it could have...
My System is this:
Host:
Windows 7 Pro 64Bit
Latest VirtualBox 4.3.26, Extension Pack for 4.3.26 installed
Guest:
Kubuntu 15.04, all current patches installed
GuestAdditions from iso shipped with VirtualBox 4.3.26
Can anybody confirm this behaviour?
Thx in advance!
Snoopy

Re: Kubuntu 15.04 Guest: 3D acceleration broken
I can confirm KDE 5 doesn't work with 3D enabled on any distro. However, even without 3D it seems as fast as most guests with 3D.
OSX, Linux and Windows Hosts & Guests
There are three groups of people. Those that can count and those that can't.

Confirmed for test build 4.3.x revision 99897, too (Kubuntu Guest, W7x64 Host).

Re: Kubuntu 15.04 Guest: 3D acceleration broken
Any progress on this? I continue ot have this problem now with Kubuntu 16.04 and VirtualBox 5.0.24 r108355. This worked fine in Kubuntu 14.10 and whatever Virtualbox version back then. The upgrade to Kubuntu 15.04 seemed to break the 3d drivers or somesuch, as layering seems in wrong order perhaps and placed the desktop background on top of everything else always?

That problem with 3D started with introduction of the Plasma Desktop. It hasn't worked ever since.
The programs do start, but invisibly. By pointing the mouse over the (former) Control Bar, you can see their Preview images and even close them. Only "solution" - running without 3D.
