Audio Error 26 When Playing Game on Windows 2000

Post by MLouise08 »

This has been driving me INSANE and I don't know what to do anymore. I want to play Magic School Bus Explores the Ocean, but no matter what I do, I always get "PC Audio error 26" when I play the game. I know it has something to do with the wrong CD Drive being used (I would post the link, but I'm too new to be able to do that apparently) but I don't even think I even HAVE a CD music tab when I check the multimedia settings. Some things to note:

- I have used both Windows and Mac host computers, but I get the same problem
-the mac is mine- Macbook Air 2013 or 2014; I forget the year, but it's pretty new, running Yosemite
-I don't know the specifics of the Windows computer- it's my boyfriend's. What I do know is that it runs Windows 8.1 and is pretty heavy-duty (gaming computer)
-I would prefer to use the Windows computer, as it has a physical CD drive and 2 TB of hard drive space to work with
- Have used both Windows 98 and Windows 2000- prefer windows 2000 because I can share files and USB drives much more easily, but if I have to use Windows 98, that's fine too, but it would definitely have to be on the Windows host machine
-I had to use the oldgamesfinder site to download the game because I don't have the original disc anymore. I turned the files into one ISO file, and burned it to a disc as well. I haven't bought the original game yet because I would rather not waste money on something that won't even work
- When I used my mac, I downloaded Virtual Clone Drive to use with the Windows 2000- this failed because the game would only work with the proper D drive, and not the virtual one created
-I believe there is an option to enable digital audio- selected this for both the D drive and F drive (clone drive), but this did not change anything
-The audio hardware for the MCI devices all work fine and seem to show up in the Device manager- running the troubleshooter does nothing

This is as much as I can think of at the moment for things I've tried to do. I hope I was specific enough, but if not, please let me know and I'll provide more information. Otherwise, does anyone have any other suggestions?

from Microsoft's site:
Supported Operating System

Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows XP
There is always the possibility the game won't run in a VM. Not all games will.

Fair enough. What about the possibility of running the game through Win 98 in Dosbox? I know it's possible, and I've seen a pretty comprehensive tutorial. Or should I just buy a really old laptop on Ebay that would run Win 98 or 2000?

Well, games always run better on hardware so if you really want to run it that badly a used PC might be the best option.
