Can't reclaim section of hard drive given to VirtualBox

After uninstalling VirtualBox I'm left with a section of unrecovered hard drive set aside for the virtual hard disk. And I can't seem to recover it in Disk Utility. I don't see any way or reclaiming that white area (see picture). I've tried turning into a partition which is fine but the process of subsequently deleting the partition seems to stall part way through at "shrinking hard drive." I'm running Mavericks up to date.

Don is correct. Just turn off Time Machine temporarily.

I think in my case it's more do I remember the reference more than recognizing it.
I've read all four of Douglas Adams books.

If you had said, "Don't Panic" or "So long and thanks for all the fish", those I remember.
