Mac OS 10.5.8 guest on Mac OS 10.10.2 host
Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere but any advice as to why VirtualBox (4.3.18) is getting dropped to an EFI shell instead of the boot proceeding when trying to install a Mac OS 10.5.8 guest on a Mac OS 10.10.2 host would be deeply appreciated. Please refer to attached.

I accidentally posted the wrong link. Fixed now. Look at the bottom of page 1. In particular changing the CPU ID.

Thanks loukingjr. Having reviewed the thread you recommended am I correct in deducing that only VB 4.3.6 is able to host a Mac OS 10.5.8 guest and even then the kernel panic workaround (traced to AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext) must be applied?

Re: Mac OS 10.5.8 guest on Mac OS 10.10.2 host
Welcome. I don't know if VB 4.3.6 is the only version you can install 10.5 in. I've never tried. I do know I had to change the CPUID using…
to get 10.6 to run. Basically you need you need to fool the guest into thinking it's running on an older Mac.
Code: Select all
VBoxManage modifyvm <vmname> --cpuidset 00000001 000006fb 00000800 80000209 078bfbffOSX, Linux and Windows Hosts & Guests

Re: Mac OS 10.5.8 guest on Mac OS 10.10.2 host
I haven't tried the most recent two releases of VB yet, I'm tied down with work related stuff that won't see me free to try new things until June. The bug ticket I put in for the problem with running older OS X versions than OS X 10.6 with any release of VB more recent then 4.3.6 hasn't been marked as resolved so I assume that it still doesn't work. The most recent hardware I have is a 2010 iMac and the most recent version of OS X (for the host) I'm using is 10.9.5. With that hardware and OS I was able to create a working OS X 10.5.8 guest.mark.wyllie wrote:Thanks loukingjr. Re: Mac OS 10.5.8 guest on Mac OS 10.10.2 host
Having now reviewed rpmurray’s support ticket (#13069) it seems that VB 4.3.6 is indeed the latest version that will run a Mac OS 10.5.8 guest but changing the CPUID is also necessary. Forgive my lack of knowledge but can anyone tell me how and where to modify the CPUID as recommended earlier in this thread? Please find attached xml and log files which I hope shed some light.

Start Terminal (in the Utilities folder on your Mac), then use the VBoxManage command that loukingjr listed in his reply. Make sure you change the <vmName> to the name of the VM you have created, put it in double-quotes if the name has a space in it.mark.wyllie wrote:Forgive my lack of knowledge but can anyone tell me how and where to modify the CPUID as recommended earlier in this thread?

Well I am judging and the install CD/DVD is not valid. We can not help with this as it would put Oracle in jeopardy.

Actually I still think this guest is not an official Apple operating system but OTOH in this case I see no legal problem. The host is apparently Apple and the guest is something I cannot identify. Though there is no official support for this.

Also let me clearly state that this forum does not support any downloaded software from warez servers.

Re: Mac OS 10.5.8 guest on Mac OS 10.10.2 host
OK, although I own a number of Macs with original Apple installations of 10.5.8 (MacBook Pro) and also 10.10.2 (Mac Mini), I was unaware the ISO used initially was unsupported (also unaware of warez servers and the practice of downloading unofficial software). I will repurchase a Mac OS 10.5.8 DVD and rip the ISO from this. I trust this will enable this thread to remain open / active as I am desperate to create the 10.5.8 guest on my 10.10.2 host. Thanks for your understanding!

Re: Mac OS 10.5.8 guest on Mac OS 10.10.2 host
I see the thread is back.
I installed Snow Leopard without a problem in VB 5.0 Beta 2 but for some reason I can't get Leopard to install. I'm going to try something and see if it works. Later.

Yes, this thread gets to live again thanks to an understanding moderator. Great that you've got Snow Leopard installed in VB 5.0 Beta 2. Please do let me know how you get on with Leopard. Cheers.
