Install failure with Centos 5.8 32bit host on Ubuntu 14.04 L
Install failure with Centos 5.8 32bit host on Ubuntu 14.04 L
I am trying to install a Centos 5.8 32bit guest on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64bit host. I want to use an application that requires this particular OS. As near as I can tell from the documentation, this should be possible so the first question is: is it possible?
After the install from the DVD, I ejected the disk and rebooted per the instructions and the during that reboot a message started about a problem with an interrupt, "unknown interrupt or fault at EIP 00000060 c05011ed 000011ec". I'm on a Dell workstation, 16 core CPU E5-2630 v3 @ 2.4 GHz with 32 GB of memory, Gallium 0.4 on NVD9 graphics. The log is attached.
I have no clue where to look. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Cheers
Mike

Re: Install failure with Centos 5.8 32bit host on Ubuntu 14.
Greetings
After some Google searches with the error message I guessed the problem must be related to 32bit vs 64bit memory access via PAE, a term that is new to me. You learn something new everyday. After some related Google searches on how to kill a VM hung in Guru Meditation state, I went into the VirtualBox system system settings and set PAE/NX, being the only control I could find related to PAE. This actually fixed the problem and now the VM boots. I just have to figure out why.
Cheers

PAE allows a 32bit CPU to address more than 4GBs. Some 32bit OSes may require it to be enabled.

To be a little more specific i686 will require PAE.

Yup and now you know more. "Imagine what you will know tomorrow"?
Kudos if you know where that quote came from.

I'm lucky if I remember what I was told we're having for dinner.

Same problem installing Centos 7 Guest from i386 minimal ISO, on a Windows Server 2012 Virtual Box host. It just hangs.
I enabled PAE/NX, and now it's installing fine.
thank you thank you people,
