[Solved] HP 3390 connects as unknown device 0000:0000

Hi, I have a Mac OSX Lion host and Windows XP guest.

The only way to use scanner on HP3390 multifunction device is via Virtualbox Windows guest as the scanner is no more supported on OSX versions above 10.5.

Recently a yellow popup showed in XP guest saying USB Device is Not recognised.

I can still print from OSX but I cannot use scanner anymore.

The device shows up properly in Virtualbox USB device list.

But it shows as Unknown device in Devece manager in XP.

I tried this with no luck.

Replace <Your_VM> with the actual name of your XP guest. And since you're at it, post a zipped VBox.log of your guest.

I changed the RAM from 2Gb to 1Gb. Changing it back did not help. I can't think about anything else.

Of course they do. But since the Virtual Box is 'virtual' I thought it would be 'easier' to 'swap' hardware.

From these outputs, it is obvious that Virtual Box is able to see the vendor and product IDs but fails to pass them to OS!

P.S. As a matter of fact when the printer failed there was suspicious activity on my virtual XP. It seamed like a virus infection. Some software configuration kept showing up until I removed it via Add Remove programs control panel. It is Russian software called Компас 3D viewer. I can't remember why I installed it. I wish I had saved states to revert to as I had when I had real Windows. Always Ghosting system partition to a documents one. I understand I will have to start doing this with VM too.

I can't believe it was as simple as up-to-date extensions pack which is not installed automatically with a new version because of continuous abuse of Oracle of imposing importance of their extension pack.

To ORACLE: If you can't pack a free product, don't, we'll find other solutions. You can? Then DON'T MESS AROUND. It is bad karma and it is bad reputation. It makes people pull hair out about nothing.

The Extension pack installation does not have reminder. It's installation has never been straight forward.

When I buy a battery powered device, I don't need a "reminder" to put batteries in it.

It's such common knowledge that when one updates VirtualBox one should use the matching extension pack and update the guest additions in existing guests it probably never occurred to anyone a "reminder" was needed.

It's also mentioned too many times in the forum to count.

As far as "It's installation has never been straight forward." All I've had to do is double-click on the extension pack file to install it on OSX, Windows and Linux hosts. I guess a single click would be more "straight forward".

I don't understand why this topic is continuing? The OP has already signalled his intention to switch to another product, a move I heartily approve of. We don't need ungrateful people here complaining because the software they got for free does not meet their needs perfectly.

Solution: make sure to upgrade the extension pack every time you upgrade the software, assuming you want the extra features which the plugins provide (USB2+ support, VRDP, webcam passthrough, PXE boot). If you see signs that USB support has reverted to USB1 only, then suspect a problem with the extension pack.
