pfSense and windows server 2012 - issues with networking

Post by leprejohn »

Hello guys I have a question for you guys and I'm a little stuck on what to do so thought I'll ask here.

I'm having some issues with pfSense and windows server 2012. I will try my best to explain what I'm trying to do.

I've set up a VM with pfSense which has 2 nics installed a bridge connection and also an internal network.

The other VM is windows server 2012 (r2) if that helps which is running on a internal network. I've set the IP's in the pfsense config as the as my host IP and sent the traffic to my windows vm but for some reason I don't seem to get internet access to this vm. I had changed the NIC on the server to bridged which worked perfectly fine and I had no issues with accessing the internet it only seems when I have it set as internal I have some problems with it.

I've been following a guide if that helped which I had is here - pc-addicts/building-the-ultimate-virtualbox-lab-intro (sorry I can post links)

I was just hoping someone could point me in the right direction I think its probably something stupid that I'm doing wrong however this is my first time using pfSense and also virtualbox in this way.

Thanks, LepreJohn :)

Just because you are using VirtualBox to host you vms does not make that a VirtualBox problem! Once you have set the two NICs (in the two vms) to use an internal network, it becomes an ordinary networking problem. It will work just the same way as a physical setup.

Have you configured the router vm as a NAT router? Is the client vm getting the correct config?

You would probably be better off posting in the pfsense forum (with a bit more info on your setup).

I had made a nooby mistake haha I must have been testing something and forgot to change the nic back to internal network which fixed the problem I was having.
