Between that level of OS X and v4.3.26, Apple deprecated a lot of "stuff", like StartupItems, and VirtualBox had to make changes. Your system may be caught in betwixt the changes.
I'm on 10.6.8 and I have no problems like that, so it's definitely not OSX at this point that might be the problematic link in the chain...
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.

If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Try to think what are the out of the ordinary things that you may have done to your system. Observe the circumstances under which this problem occurs; another app being launched before, time that has elapsed since you started, etc.
The only thing that has changed is the update to VB 4.3.26 - only then did the problem start.

My iMac has always been in that mode from day 1.
The only OS X apps I use regularly are Mail, Firefox, MS Office 2011, Vbox and Crossover, so I'm not sure there would be any advantage in 64 bit mode, and I would be reluctant to risk even more problems.

Would uninstalling then reinstalling VB retain my virtual machines ?

Just tried it again and I get the error message even after launching Win XP then immediately shutting it down.

The error you are getting hasn't shown up in a long time. Here is a Google search page with links that might help you.

Ticket on this problem re-opened 8 months ago (albeit on Linux host) and still open.

Uh huh, and on a Linux host. Which you don't have. :)

Chris, just so you know I wasn't being flippant or dismissive. The problem is the error is so rare it almost certainly local to your setup. Things you could try are repairing disk and disk permissions using Disk Utility. Make sure to use the VirtualBox_Uninstall.tool before reinstalling VB. It's also possible that some third party application you have installed is causing the error.
