Networking Bridge with TP-Link TL-WN722N

Post by JakRuzL »

VirualBox Version: 4.3.26 r98988

Host: Windows 7 Pro x64, 8G ram, Wireless TP-Link TL-WN722N

Guest: Windows 2012 Standard x64, 2G ram, Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop (82540EM)

Modem/Router: Cisco DPC3827 DOCSIS 3.0 Gateway

Attached using Bridged Adapter to the TP-Link Wireless, Promiscuous Mode: Deny, Is given its own mac

I have tried various ways to set this up to allow inbound connections to both machines. I have used dhcp for the host and guest adapters, and have tried setting them both to static. In all cases I have outbound access from the host or guest.

When trying to get inbound access I can sometimes access the host using RDP when the correct IP shows up in the router, but never am I able access the guest. I have watched in the "Connected Devices Summary" of my router, that if I access from the host it shows the host mac address. If I access from the guest it will show the guest ip but the host mac address.

What is strange is the router also has a "Pre-Assigned DHCP Address" section. In this section I can see the mac address of the guest and it receives an ip which I can also see using ipconfig on the guest machine, but it doesn't show this mac address ever in the "Connected Devices Summary".

If I try everything in static mode not using dhcp on the host or guest. I have outbound access for both. But depending on which was the machine with the last connection that is what shows up in the "Connected Devices Summary" with the mac address of the host. Yes this happens when the guest connects last, it's ip show up and the hosts mac is listed. I can never get both machines to show up in the "Connected Devices Summary" together.

I have both firewalls turned off on the host and guest.

Please Help

Bridged networking is unpredictable with wireless networks. The extra security built into the wireless protocols (because they are broadcast, not carried by wire) interferes with the basic operation of bridged networking. Unfortunately different manufacturers implement the protocols in different ways. Some work well with the techniques programmers use to implement bridged networking, some don't.

The basic bridge operation is to insert a filter driver into the NIC driver on the host so that it separates traffic for the host from traffic for the guest. The traffic has to go through the host NIC, regardless of which OS IP stack it ends up in.

If you have more than one NIC in the host, you may do better by dedicating one NIC to the host and one to the guest.
