WLAN Adapter Not Recognized After Uninstalling VirtualBox

I installed VirtualBox on 64-bit Windows 8.1 to experiment with the Windows 10 Technical Preview. After a while I removed the Windows 10 VM and uninstalled VirtualBox.
After uninstalling VirtualBox my wireless adapter was no longer recognized by Windows 8.1, and I had to install the driver and setup the adapter all over again. Since that time there have been several occasions when my wireless adapter is no longer recognized by Windows, and I have to reinstall it.
Is it possible that uninstalling VirtualBox had an adverse effect on my network setup, and if so how can I fix this?
