Windows 10 Preview with 3D disabled

Recently we fixed a bug in the VirtualBox Guest Additions which prevented loading the VirtualBox WDDM driver if 3D is disabled in the VM settings. The latest Guest Additions test build which can be found here contains the fix. After you installed the new GA, 3D can be disabled in the VM settings but automatic screen resize and mouse integration will still work.

Given the topic title... Frank, are you saying that this only affects Win10 guests? Or does it affect any Windows guest (Win7 and later) which doesn't enable 3D?

I just set up my first VB so I can preview Windows 10.

Seemingly running ok... but when I try to add GuestAdditions from the 'Devices' menu using the specific 'Insert guest additions CD image' having downloaded the ISO it to the downloads folder on the VB it does nothing.

If I then try to follow the user manual instructions on installation of guest additions with a 'Manual' insert I have no menu option 'Mount CD/DVD ROM' under the devices tab... I only have 'CD/DVD Devices' and then a sub menu but no option to 'Mount CD/DVD ROM'

Any help would be great

You should not need to download anything. The guest additions CD image is included in the VirtualBox program. The "Insert guest additions CD image ..." will bind this image to the CD drive of the vm.

Normally this is all that is needed. Modern Windows OSs are normally se to autorun by default. Windows 8/10 will normally pop up a message asking what you want to do with the mounted CD/DVD. If you miss this you should be able to run the installer by opening the CD drive in the vm.

Thank you Frank, I was affected by this issue ever since Windows Technical Preview launched, and VBoxGuestAdditions_4.3.27-99206 fixed it!

For the record, my case was:
Host: Windows 7 Ultimate x64
Guest: Windows Technical Preview/Windows 10 Technical Preview x64, all builds up to 10041
I do not have 3D hardware accelerated graphics available on this host, so I could not run the guest with 3D acceleration enabled. With 3D disabled, Guest Additions display driver was not working in the guest. GA worked fine in all previous versions of Windows.

This made my life more convenient, now I can resize window/use full screen for the guest. Much appreciated!

It affects only Windows 10 Preview guests. Windows 7 and Windows 8 with the WDDM driver installed (with Windows 8 it's not possible to install the XPDM driver) allow to resize the guest window and provide mouse integration even if the 3D VM setting is disabled. This used to work with Windows 10 Preview as well but recently MS changed something which required a little change to make it work again.

Again, this is only relevant for users which have the 3D VM setting disabled.

Appreciate this post. Had no problems with resizing display in my Win7 Pro VM but could not figure out why my Win10 evaluation installation would not resize. Working now. Thanks

Followup post: I have been using the test build of guest additions for a couple of days now, and have noticed one problem.

If the guest turns its display off (for example, power saving setting is enabled), then the guest additions display driver seems to crash. By this I mean that when I wake the guest up (e.g. move mouse) the display does come back on, but in Device Manager the Virtualbox Graphics Adapter acquires yellow triangle. Also, the guest size doesn't automatically resize anymore and it reverts to standard resolutions (consistent with the display driver not running).

The workaround is to not allow the guest to turn its display off, e.g. switch off power saving settings.

I don't know whether it's related, but my W7 and W10 guests cannot resize to full-screen if I have 3D on. My host is W7 x64, VB 5.0.10, and I'm currently using Intel HD Graphics.
