mp3tag can't write to shares

I've been using a few applications on a real windows machine and I recently switched everything to a virtualbox container, running under a Linux host. While everything has been working great, one application (mp3tag) has problems with shares from my NAS sever (Synology).

Mp3tag opens my shared directory of mp3 files and can read everything, but when I try to write (for example convert filename to tag) then I mp3tag complains it can't write, to be more specific the error is:

Code: Select all

File "Y:\dir\file.mp3" cannot be opened for writing.
This works fine when mp3tag is run from the real windows machine, but not under virtualbox. Oh, I should add, that some mp3 files CAN be opened and saved via mp3tag! Weird...

Any suggestions please?

Thank you.

PS:
Host is running CentOS 6.6 with VirtualBox 4.3 (4.3.24_98716_el6-1.x86_64). The guest is Windows XP (Service Pack 3).

*update*

I think I narrowed the problem down to file names. For example, these files are not writeable:

Code: Select all

A01 - Enigma - I. The Voice of Enigma, II. Principles of Lust.mp3
A02 - Enigma - III. Callas Went Away.mp3
A03 - Enigma - IV. Mea Culpa, V. The Voice & The Snake, VI. Knocking On Forbidden Doors.mp3
B01 - Enigma - VII. Back To The Rivers Of Belief, VIII. Sadeness, IX. Mea Culpa, X. Principles of Lust, XI. The Rivers Of Belief.mp3
But they are perfectly writeable once I rename them to:

Code: Select all

A01.mp3
A02.mp3
A03.mp3
B01.mp3
Maybe a problem unrelated to virtualbox?

Maybe mp3tag doesn't like Enigma? Might have a hard-rock or rap preference... :)

Seriously, though, not knowing anything about Synology's OS, maybe something doesn't like the extra periods in the filename. Try removing them, or other special characters until mp3tag starts working, then add them back in until it stops. The character you added when it stops again may be the issue.

Your network shared folder is a real Windows-style network share, right? Not a Virtualbox share? Virtualbox shares are only for transferring files, not for running programs.

I'll try the trick with the characters, to see when/where it gets stuck.

The remote share is indeed a real network share, more specifically it is a Samba share on the Synology NAS device.

I'm not 100% sure that this is a virtualbox problem, maybe this is an issue with mp3tag (but then why does it work fine on my real windows laptop?) weird...

I'm fairly sure that this is what is causing the issue. Once the OS sees the period it is expecting to see a file extension.
