pxeboot: vm crashes when starting winpe

Post by Muug »

Hi,
I've got a W7x64-pc and installed the latest VirtualBox on it. I added the corresponding extensionpack too. Next I created a VM and I want to do a pxeboot. I can see the vm loading the winpe and starting it, but after about two seconds the vm crashes with error 0x000000C4.
What could be the problem? And what could be the solution? :D

Are you sure that your winpe was built with Windows 7 64bit? You need to set the guest os type to the Windows version of the winpe.

Yes we do. It's two years we use that winpe to boot real bare metal-computers. But I want to go virtual
I've been searching everywhere and all I get is uncomplete info about not using Intel-network cards, or defining a second one that needs to be tied to the DHCP-server..... weird stuff I must say, hard to believe.
The WinPE has been generated in MDT 2013 and is uploaded to WDS, we've automated deployments.

Well, humor us anyway: try setting the guest OS type to Win 8.1 (64 bit).

I'm going to delete the vm and redo it.
I want to be sure

yep, still does it.
Thanks ! Thinking out of the (virtual)box clearly still is important.

MDT 2013 = Win 8.1
So you need to set the guest os to Win 8.1 for the WinPE boot.
You could set it back to Win 7 after the installation finishes for the boot of Win 7 itself.
