Issue installing Virtual Box on Windows

Hello,
Here is my <sarcasm>Fun</Sarcasm> experience with installing VirtualBox on my windows 7
I tried to install virtual box on my Windows 7 machine, it got part way through the installation when my computer seemed to freeze. The screen went all screwy, I let it sit for about 30mins before deciding that it was stuck and attempted to reboot the computer, however windows would no longer boot showing the BSOD error Unmountable Boot Volume.
Selecting the try to recover system from the advanced start menu did not help. I then booted my computer with the Windows 7 installation dvd and opened a command prompt and I could not seem to access my C drive (now labeled as F) it would jut hang. Using diskpart I could see the the windows boot partition (formally C now F) was showing as RAW instead of NTFS. I was thinking that I was going to have to reformat the partition and re-install windows from scratch and recover what I could from backup but I didn't feel quite defeated so I decided to run chkdsk. chkdsk detected that the volume bitmap was incorrect. I ran chkdsk /F and it was able to correct the volume bitmap and I was then able to access the drive again as well as boot windows.
Does anyone have any ideas with what went horribly wrong here with the installation. Does the install make changes to filesystem partition setup and it crashed part way through leaving things in limbo?
As you can imagine, I'm very hesitant to try this again
Thanks
