Serial port OSX , Cisco XRv

Hello Guys/Girls,
After using vmware workstation for a while on a pc i wanted to start emulating a Cisco XRv router on virtualbox with my mac.
Since i am a newbie i do not have enhough experience on how to create a virtual serial port on the mac so that it can connect to the XRv router.
In the tab on the Virtual machine i have the "port" options, but when i try to specify /dev/ttyxxx as a serial. I get an error when booting the machine.
Q 1 ) Does virtualbox create a port itself when specifying that is needs to look for /dev/ttyxxx
Q 2 ) I have tried running virtualbox as a root, but that does not solve it either. Should it matter ?
Q 3 ) Should i use the local terminal in OSX or would i be better of using another tool ?
Sorry for the hassle but perhaps someone came across such a thing, i did not find any related posts here.
Kind regards,
Henk
