Disconnecting host displays causes VirtualBox to abort

Host machine specs:
MacBook Pro 15" (mid-2014) w/ 16GB RAM
Windows 8.1 64-bit with Boot Camp
VirtualBox 4.3.24 r98716
8 monitors (yeah, you read that right.)

Guest machine specs:
Windows Server 2012 64-bit
6 GB RAM
2 monitors

When at work, I have 3 monitors connected to the DisplayPort/HDMI connectors on the Mac, and the rest I drive via DisplayLink USB docks (connected to the host, and not routed to the VM via the USB virtualization.) When running the VM in this configuration, everything works fine. But, if I "un-dock" (i.e. remove the USB cable and video cables), the guest virtual machine will suddenly abort, and I lose whatever I'm working on. BUT - pausing the virtual machine, disconnecting, and then un-pausing prevents the machine from aborting.

Does anyone else have issues with VirtualBox randomly aborting due to a host monitor suddenly disconnecting? I know I'm kind of an edge case, but it seems like it could be an issue for others, especially running on laptops using actual docking stations.

When a problem occurs 100% of the time under the same condition you can hardly call it "randomly aborting".

In any case I would never yank the monitor cables out of a running physical PC (or a TV for that matter), and I can't imagine why a virtual machine would like it either. I'm guessing it's the loss of the HDMI connections.
