First Time Install Problems

Post by Larry-Cleveland »

This is my first post so please be kind :)

It looks to me like VB is not finishing the install process. I have run the install (more then once) with the default settings for running a Win XP install. I can open up the “VM VirtualBox Manager” and see my XP named listing on the left. I click start, a small window pops up on the top left (guessing it would be the desk top?) that is locked up and only beeps when clicked on. A few seconds after a “starting VM” window pops up stating “Creating process for virtual machine 9X XP" (my name). It just sits on this screen with the % never moving from 0%. I never get to the point of loading XP like the manual tells me I should.

I have VB (ver4.3.24 r98716) on a HP XW6400, Xeon 1.86GHz, 8 GB Ram, 32 bit Windows 7 Ultimate (SP1) updated system.

I do have the “Windows Virtual PC XP” running on this box.

VB Manager tells me no logs found. I have searched and not found any answers for this problem on the forum.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks Larry

I don't believe you can run XP mode and VirtualBox at the same time. What source did you use to install XP into VirtualBox?

<<What source did you use to install XP into VirtualBox?>>

I never got to the point where VirtualBox promped me to install XP from my CD.

I will turn off my "XP mode" in Win 7 and see if that makes any differance.

Thank You very much for your help!

Larry, according to your first post VirtualBox is installed and the VirtualBox Manager already has an XP guest listed. How did it get there? You've lost me.

"XP mode" shouldn't really cause a problem - it doesn't use VT-x AFAIK.

What we do need is a VM log file. Right click the VM in the GUI. Select "Show Log". Save "VBox.log" to a file. Compress that file and attach it to a message here. Always make sure the VM is fully shut down before taking a log.

And just in case this isn't fully understood: VBox has created an XP compatible VM for you. In order to actually install XP, you'll need an XP install CD (or ISO image of one) - and a valid license, if you want to keep using it.

Hi Guys

This is what I did today.

1. I opened up the VirtualBox Manager and removed the one virtual machine I had loaded.
2. I clicked on new and selected Win XP 32, with the rest default set up selections, following the steps in the manual at 1.7
It created the new virtual machine and displayed it on the Virtual Box Manager screen
3. I click start and a small window popped up (I am thinking this is that VM screen) manual 1.8.1
After a minute a box pops up with a big green arrow called “Starting VM”, with in that box it says “Creating process for virtual machine” it is stuck there and never does a thing after 2 hours. I never got to the part in step in 1.8.1 where it asks for the installation media. (yes i have an XP CD ready)

After each step I checked to see if a “Log File” was made and it keeps telling me “No Log File Found”. Clicking the Refresh did not help. VM open or closed still no log.

Thank You all again for your help…Larry

I would suggest uninstalling VirtualBox and reinstalling with VirtualBox 4.3.12. Make sure you install as the correct user (not as administrator), but do use "Run as administrator" when installing.
