CentOS 6.2 guest unbelievably slow on Windows 8 host

Post by fromin »

Hi,

I have installed a CentOS 6.2 machine on Windows 8.1 host and it runs incredibly slow (i.e. things that take 30ms on Mac host on the same machine setup take 8 seconds on Windows 8.1 host).

Attached is VBox.log

Any ideas? Thank you

OK, I'm a little bit confused. You mention a Windows host and a Mac host on the same machine(?) with the same setup with CentOS 7. Can you clarify things a little bit? And what are those "things" that you do? Graphics? CPU? Network? I/O? You need to give us a lot more details. Minimum information needed for assistance.

Ok let me clarify. It was the same VM setup which I ran on a Windows machine and a Mac machine (2 different host machines, same VM setup). It runs without problems on Mac and fast as hell, yet very slow on Windows, the very same VM, the very same tasks. The tasks mostly use CPU and storage (calculating and moving files). It's not just about the tasks, the installation of various things was slow on Windows host too, so it's a system-wide issue, not just our tasks.

I'm using VirtualBox 4.3.24 and I have Guest Additions installed.

Both host and guest are 64bit systems.

Adding maximum memory and CPU does not help and the PC performance is not the issue as it's one of the best machines available on the market.

VBoxStartupLog is here (cannot post links yet): www [dot] filedropper [dot] com [slash] vboxstartup , VBoxLog is in the original post.

Please let me know if you need to know anything else.

Why didn't you just attach it as you did the vbox.log?

What I'd like to see is a VBox.log from the Mac side as well, so we can compare the one that you posted from the Windows side. Zipped please. Local.

  • You're running 4.3.12 on Win, 4.3.24 on the Mac. Maybe because of the security hardening issues?
  • Your Mac memory is dangerously low. You have 4342MB available and you assign 4096+16 MB to the guest. Not a good idea.
  • Opening the disk on the Mac: 2 sec.
  • Opening the disk on the Win: 31 sec.
The last one I think is the clue that reveals what's going on. I bet that on the Mac side you have an SSD HD while on Windows a traditional HD. Is that correct?

I didn't see anything else that could be favoring the Mac. If nothing else, the Windows seems like a more powerful system. Again, if on the Mac it takes 2 sec to open the vdi and 32 on the Windows side, there's something going on there. Antivirus scanning? I don't know... Try to find a cross-platform benchmark and see where your bottleneck might be.

IMHO, these are usually network issues, or Windows update etc.
