unexpected loss of vm and vdi-file

Hi!
i had a win xp guest running on virtualbox 1.5.6 with ubuntu 7.10 as host.
unfortunately i have to install xp native again and due to this i had to reduce the size of the partition where i had the .vdi file too. before resizing the partition with gparted (parted magic) i did a backup of al my files but i forgot an important file on my guest system. after resizing the partition the vm as well as the .vdi file were gone...
they are not in /home/user/.VirtualBox anymore...
has anybody an idea why and where i lost my guest-system? and is there a possibilty to get it back?
thanks
