Network access stalls apparently on large(ish) transfers

Hi there,
I'm running a guest Debian 7.8.0 (32 bit) on a 64 bit Win 7 host.
Everything appears to be working, except that on large(ish) network transfers, the connection seems to stall.
So if I do a wget of a file of around 90MB, it typically gets to around 20% before stalling. If I cancel the command, I can immediately resume with a "wget -c" and it starts up again just fine.
The same problem appears to exist when using git to download files - large ones stall.
Is there a way to diagnose this, or is there a known fix?
TIA,
wpb
