Ubuntu (Linux) Symbolic Links a problem in Windows Guest

I use a Windows guest on a Ubuntu 14.04 LTS host. I make a backup of my important Ubuntu files and folders to a shared disk. I want to use Windows to make a second backup of that to a removable hard drive. The problem is that there are several symbolic links included in the backup, and Windows recognise them as real files on the shared disk. The result is that windows tries to copy the contents of all link targets, instead of just the link. How can I overcome this?
