cannot setup a new vm dropdown menus not working right.

I'm having a few problems with virtualbox in ubuntu hardy (version 1.6)
I am trying to get guitarpro5 working with the realistic sound font engine.
I installed it in a vista vm but it was all over the place speeding up and slowing down with the Cpu maxed out at 100%
So I figured I would user my 2000 vm which i copied over from another pc
Creating a new virtual machine to use with the disk image is problematic.
for some reason The only option i can get for the guest type is "other"
and after creating the machine I get no options for sound in the drop down menu and
these are acting very strange if you try to select them it looks as if a line is rapidly scrolling up or down and you get no drop down options.
I wonder what I have done since it used to work!
any Idea's
Will 2000 run at a steady spead in the vm?
I'd just use tuxguitar but this is for my brother and to be honest the RSE engine actually makes a guitar sound like a guitar unlike most midi solutions.
